A Decade of Progress or the End of Civilisation?
People still talk about the sixties. The decade is seen by some as the beginning of a brave new world - by others as the root of all the social ills we now suffer.
For those who grew up in the 60s, it was the end of the constraints of the drab 50s and the beginning of a world where anything seemed possible.
The post war baby boomers came of age and suddenly had spending power - and that power changed everything.
It opened the door to a revolution in fashion and popular music. It allowed young designers and musicians to experiment with dress and music and express their rebellion.
When Idealism Gave Way to Cynicism
A decade that opened with youthful naivety and hopeless idealism gradually gave way to maturity and cynicism.

Jimi Hendrix made Electric Ladyland in 1968 and it was immediately controversial because the cover was adornded with naked women (Hendrix didn't like it either) and banned in the US (but not Europe). But this album contains probably his best work.
Hendrix could be rambling and undisciplined but his music here is carefully crafted into an album that hangs together beautifully. There are lovely contrasts between tight sounding tracks like 'Crosstown Traffic' and the loose smouldering menace of 'Voodo chile'
