1979 - Margaret Thatcher becomes Britain's first woman prime minister. She vows to destroy socialism.
A Decade of Change
When the seventies arrived people began to recover from the excesses of the sixties. The hopeless idealism of the hippy movement was replace with a more realistic political awareness.
However not all was thrown away and many of the ideas from the sixties, such as an awareness of environmental issues and womens' rights, became mainstream in the seventies.
More depressing was a growth in interational terrorism, the Vietnam war and conflict in the Middle East that prompted an oil crisis among Western nations.
Music that Matched the Decade
Pop music changed too and became more commercial. As well as cheesy one-hit wonders and punk we were treated to the delights of Disco with all the fashion excess that involved. But there was good music too.
Many of the musicians of the sixties matured and produced music that was more polished but still true to its roots. These artists encouraged a new generation of singers and songwriters to give their best.
Featured Classic 70s Album
Carole King had been writing songs for other artists since 1958 with enormous success. She had herself sung and had a hit with 'It might as well rain until September' in the early sixties, but didn't resume singing solo until the late sixties.
With Tapestry in 1970, her second solo album, she hit the jackpot. Every song on the album was a winner. The production wasn't elaborate, it didn't need to be, the songs spoke for themselves. This album had a profound influence on all solo singer/songwriters who followed her in the 70s.
