December 25th 1989 - Romanian president Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena are excecuted by a firing squad after a secret military tribunal finds them both guilty of crimes against the state.
Greed is Good
The eighties was a decade of Thatcherism and Reganomics where greed was seen as good. Financial systems became more open and more interconnected allowing a lot of people to make a lot of money.
Relatively cheap home computers became available and spawned backroom software companies. Those who weren't playing computer games were trying to solve Rubik's cube.
The sexual revolution fell from favour with the advent of AIDs and prompted a revival of conservative values.
It was the decade of either big hair and power dressing (who could forget shoulder pads) or lurid sportswear.
The Death of Disco
MTV arrived and the Disco craze of the seventies began to fade from view to be replaced with Rap and more diverse musical styles. The availability of cheap synthesisers and computers allowed wannabe pop stars to produce hits in their bedrooms.
Featured Classic 80s Album
Donald Fagen was with Steely Dan and everyone knows how cool they were. But if they were cool then Fagen on his own with The Nightfly is super cool. Fagen grew up in the 50s and 60s listening to the jazz greats on late night radio and this album is his homage to that era. In fact you'd swear some of the songs were covers of old standards if you didn't read the sleeve note credits.
All the tracks are beautifully crafted and, as you'd expect, performed by the best musicians around. This is an album for the wee small hours. Highly recommended.
