The 1960s If you grew up in the sixties then you'll have fond memories of flower power and mini skirts. But there was a lot more to the 60s than that. It was time of profound social change with a liberalisation of attitudes towards sex and drugs. There was political upheaval with a reaction against traditional conservative values. This was reflected in the fashion and music of the time and that legacy was passed on to the decades that followed. Probably nothing evokes the spirit of that decade better than the sounds of the sixties. |
The 1970s Were you a child of the seventies? A decade that seems to have to apologise for not being the sixties. The 70s awoke with a hangover from the 60s with much of the idealism of the previous decade binned to make way for a more pragmatic approach to politics and social issues. But the 1970s was a decade of conflict, not only in Vietnam, but in the Middle East and an escalation in terrorism. Fashion became even more outlandish and while the sounds of the seventies became more commercial there was still the rebelliousness of Punk. |
The 1980s Who could forget the eighties? It was the decade when conservatism finally won out over the liberism of the previous two decades.Suddenly greed was good and nothing to be ashamed of - unlike promiscuity, which was blamed for the AIDs plague. The information age arrived with the advent of cheap home computers and more television channels. 1980s fashion drew from influences as diverse as executive power dressing to sports wear but the sounds of the eighties were probably most influenced by synthesisers. |
